Group tries to raise awareness of problems in Darfur

Iowa activist Brenda Schumann was featured today by Radio Iowa for the work that she is doing to call attention to the genocide in Darfur. In the lead-up to the Iowa Caucuses, Brenda traveled to campaign events with her grandson's Flat Stanley. She would ask the candidates to take a picture with Flat Stanley, and then hit them with a Darfur question! Read more about Brenda's great work below.

— The three leading activist organizations committed to ending the atrocities and violence in Darfur today released a questionnaire highlighting the positions of Senators John McCain and Barack Obama on ending the violence and suffering for millions of Darfuris.

— In a full-page Manchester Union Leader advertisement, five hundred New Hampshire primary voters pressed both Republican and Democratic presidential candidates to outline a clear policy to end the suffering in Darfur and to make preventing future atrocities a priority in campaigns. The advertisement is the latest phase of a multi-faceted campaign by Darfur advocates — including the Save Darfur Coalition, the Genocide Intervention Network, American Jewish World Service, the ENOUGH Project, and STAND: A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition — that includes on-the-ground advocacy, billboard advertisements and grassroots outreach.

— Late last night, in a bipartisan show of force, the United States Senate unanimously passed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act which would authorize state and local governments to divest from companies that support the Khartoum government and prohibit federal contracts with those companies.

The advertisement, signed by hundreds of Iowans including Rep.
