What Will You Do for Darfur as President?

It is time for the presidential candidates to tell us how, if elected, they intend to end the genocide in Darfur. Senator Obama and Senator McCain have expressed concern, but have yet to provide any concrete details of their plans.

Ending genocide must be a top priority on our next president’s foreign policy agenda, rather than empty rhetoric. The candidates should:

1. Formulate a clear policy on Darfur.
2. Post this on the “issues” section of their website.
3. Reference their Darfur policy in their stump speech.

Sign the petition below and ask the candidate's foreign policy advisors to develop a Darfur policy and prioritize this policy in the campaign.

We can make a difference. Take one minute out of your day to tell all the presidential candidates and their foreign policy advisors that ending genocide in Darfur is an important election issue to you and that you want to know what actions they intend to undertake.

On Feb. 26, 2008, the world marked the fifth anniversary of the genocide in Darfur that has left as many as 400,000 dead and 2.5 million homeless. As an American, I am disturbed that the issues relating to Darfur, as well as other situations of genocide and mass atrocities, have become nothing more than empty rhetoric in your speeches. Do you have a strategy for ending the genocide in Darfur?

The time has come for your candidate to match their words of concern with a tangible plan of action to end the genocide in Darfur. I call on you to:

1. Formulate a clear policy on Darfur.
2. Post this on the "issues" section of your campaign website.
3. Have your candidate reference this policy in their stump speech.

I urge you to consider these points as you determine your Darfur policy:

* Peace in Darfur requires a credible and inclusive peace process. 
* The peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the peacekeeping missions in Chad/Central African Republic (EUFOR) are still not deployed and are not adequately equipped.
* Individuals who are obstructing the peace process and/or the deployment of peacekeepers are currently acting with impunity.
* The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement between Khartoum and Southern Sudan is at risk of collapsing, which would put an end to any chance for peace in Darfur.

I, and countless other Americans like me, believe that formulating a plan to end genocide in Darfur is a matter of moral principle that a true American leader will not shy away from. For five years, genocide has unfolded before our eyes. I believe it is time for your campaign to move beyond talk and propose real solutions.

Come November, I will vote for Darfur.
