South Carolina Loves DarfurSouth Carolina Loves Darfur

Congratulations to all of our South Carolina activists for their hard work in the lead up to the South Carolina primaries last month. Throughout January, these activists traveled to campaign events and delivered thousands of letters and petition signatures to the presidential candidates, forcing the candidates to recognize that Darfur is an important issue in South Carolina. Because of their hard work and initiative, the Save Darfur Coalition named the members of the Darfur Action Group of South Carolina their Darfur Heroes for the month of February.

"The upcoming South Carolina Presidential primaries would soon provide a perfect opportunity to share our newfound commitment with presidential candidates and fellow voters. As part of the statewide effort to "ask the candidates" about Darfur, we donned orange shirts that boldly stated, "I vote for Darfur," and we set out to meet the candidates as they asked South Carolinians for their votes. Even though we haven't had the chance to vote yet (the primary was the first time I've voted in an election), we found ourselves at rallies and town hall meetings, talking to well-seasoned voters about why they should consider the role of the next President in stopping the genocide, and answering questions from "Who's Darfur?" to "Will it really affect us if we help people in Africa?"." —Shannon Looney, South Aiken High Darfur Action Group
